STEAK ‘N SHAKE – WESTERN BBQ N’ BACON

– 14, Frodsham St, CH1 3JL, Chester

Climbing and burgers come hand in hand after a hard(ish) week of work and this week is no different. Like any other Friday evening Steak ‘N Shake is the bearer of our rich and flavoursome dinner.

Steak ‘N Shake feels like an anomaly to myself, there are a handful of different attributes that make it unique, and that’s why my friends and I like it so much.

On this return it’s the Western BBQ N’ Bacon burger that’s caught my Burger eye and what a great choice it turned out to be.

((Double steakburger, American cheese, bacon, diced and crispy onions, sweet ‘n smokey BBQ sauce))

With four of my very favourite ingredients on the burger, my expectations were high and it didn’t disappoint. As always the steak from Steak ‘N Shake was cooked to a level where it falls apart in your mouth, making it an effortless pleasure and with the burger being very easy to handle, there was no work involved.

To finish off the package, the crunch of the diced and crispy onions were softened by the sweet ‘n smokey BBQ sauce, which was smothered on all corners of the steak patty.

As a collective with the food, the service and the portion size considered, this burger receives a respectable 8.1 out of 10
Well done Steak ‘N Shake, I’ll see you next time.

POP’S PLACE – SILVERTON BURGER

 – Cankarjevo nabrežje 3, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia

Slovenia, Ljubljana is as charming as a city can be. The surroundings, the people, the man made river that runs right through the heart of the city and the faultless weather, you can’t ask for anything more.

With a few days of exciting activities ready to begin, It was lunch time on the first day and a burger sprung to mind. Pop’s Place was situated on the river on a busy side street with large awnings to save you from the hot weather.

A quick scan over the menu and the Silverton Burger caught my attention. The Silverton Burger–

((Custom beef blend, crispy onions, cheddar cheese, home-made BBQ sauce, signature brioche bun))

I am the first person to give recognition to a restaurant who has clearly crafted each individual burger to provide the best possible product to their customers. This is what I feel Pop’s Place has done here, or attempted at least.

This burger sounded like it should of blown me away, but it didn’t quite get there. The bread was weak, the meat was undercooked (for me) and there was too much sauce. But, the bacon was shredded into small chunks which sunk into the melted cheese and not forgetting the onion ring, possibly the nicest I’ve had to date.

I’ve come to the point in my blogging career that I feel it a necessity that I consider all aspects. Service, surroundings and effort in the production have been taken into consideration, giving this of burger a rating of 7.4 out of 10.

SUBMARINE BURGER – ORIGINAL

– Frankopanska 11, Croatia

Croatia, another new country that I’m able to tick off my list and another new exciting burger. Eating burgers all around the world gives you the sense that they’re one of the few things that we all have in common.

A very bold branded burger bar stood proud on one of the busy retail streets and with an enticing menu, we sat down anticipating good things. Welcome to Submarine Burger (Formerly; Yellow Submarine)

Original;

((Brioche bun, patty, submarine sauce, lettuce and onion))

As you can see from the above stated ingredients it’s a very simple burger. With calculated intentions, I chose this as I feel a burger restaurant is only as good as its simplest burger, so I was excited to see what can be done.

A suspiciously quick turn around time, from ordering and receiving our food meant we were stunned before anything was even eaten.

The burgers golden exterior was aesthetically pleasing but it’s internal structure did present a few issues. The amount of submarine sauce did overwhelm other important ingredients and made the burger quite slippery. Considering the deliciousness of the submarine sauce this wasn’t such a terrible thing.

The bread and meat were beautiful, and knowing everything is 100% organic, you feel that little bit better about indulging on such a guilty pleasure.

Coming to a comprehensive rating of this burger, I considered the service and also the wholesome attributes that submarine burger promote. A solid burger rating of 8 out of 10.

ZING BURGER & CO – BBQ BURGER

– somewhere in Budapest, Hungary.

After being in Budapest for a long 5 hours, an introductory burger felt almost mandatory, which brought us to an area of street food named Karaván

There was a lot of abstract and unorthodox foods within the confines of Karaván, which gave you a good sense of what type of foods the Hungarians like to dine on. But tonight I only have eyes on the promising looking burgers from Zing Burger & Co.

The BBQ Burger was the unsuspecting choice;

((Chilli mayo, caramelised onion, patty, cheddar, bacon, BBQ sauce, pickles))

Quite simply all I’m going to do here is sing this burgers praises, all the ingredients were extremely flavoursome with beautiful textures. The patty was cooked well done, which sat well with both sauces making the burger pleasant from all areas and the bread was second to none, which we all know is important.

Apart from the wait time, which was around 15 – 20 minutes and considering the price 1390HUF (£3.90) this burger was a game changer in Budapest.

Burger rating: 9.2 out of 10

TURTLE BAY – TWO WAY CHICKEN BURGER

– 33-35 Oxford St, Manchester M1 4WB

While holstering a sensitive palate, spicy foods can be quite daunting, so dining in the Caribbean restaurant Turtle Bay can be an exciting yet a nerve racking experience.

Only set for a light luncheon i fixed my eyes firmly on the burgers. Being overly cautious I picked out the least spicy and left everything else ignored, which left me with the Two Way Chicken Burger –

((Spicy panko crumbed chicken fillet, topped with pull jerk chicken, crisp gem lettuce, fresh pineapple chow & herb mayo in a sweet bun))

This looks and sounds like only something Turtle Bay could manifest, with a prominent Caribbean twist to what can normally be a mundane chicken burger.

With flavours that felt endless and textures that caressed your lips and mouth, this burger carry’s a lot in-comparison to its size. The two different types of cooked chicken was the game changer, each chicken had a very unique flavour which i believe could stand for the reason this burger was so brilliant for its size.

Lastly, the fresh pineapple chow was extremely spicy and in opinion unnecessary, the burger would cope very easily without it.

An applaudable effort by Turtle Bay, this will stand in my top 5 chicken burgers eaten to date. Burger rating: 7.7 out of 10.

THE PLOUGH – THE FARMER

– The Roe, St Asaph, Denbighshire, North Wales

High expectations flourished from the pleasant, polite service and the homely surroundings of The Plough – St Asaph, but all of the above was soon to be irrelavant once the food had been served.

Feeling extremely famished seated next to 4 of my close friends, itching for the highly anticipated food to be served meant all we could talk about was the aforementioned meals – I had ordered ‘THE FARMER’ burger; 8 oz, prime handmade beef burger, topped with bacon and mozzarella cheese, which sounds simple but appetizing, right?

Now, the aesthetics are outstanding, I’ll give them that but that’s all they’ll get. This burger is missing so many key ingredients they may aswell start again, maybe with the taste. The ‘8oz handmade beef burger’ was way too thick, the burger lacked any sauce making it dry and very hard to swallow, the cheese was tasteless and lack there of it and well, you know where I’m going with this.

It’s always burger o’clock on my watch, but I have no time for this burger. Unfortunately. Burger rating 1 out of 10.

GORILLA – CHEESEBURGER w/ CHORIZO

54-56 Whitworth St W, Manchester M1 5WW

As a beer filled bender enrolled in Manchester with one of my very close friends, we landed in his place of work; Gorilla.
After many discounted cocktails & beers were washed away by Alex and I, he insisted on trying the Gorilla Cheeseburger, which beforehand was marked as the best burger in Manchester by a Gorilla employee (bias?). The burger arrived with thinly cut chips, an adequately portioned bowl of mayonnaise and a slice of grilled chorizo as an added extra, all laid upon a decorative slab of pine.

The burger was to share with my Friend so it was evenly sliced in half, which is unusual to me but happily done. The ingredients were; pickles, burger sauce, aged cheddar, bondi lettuce & seasoned fries on the side. As the first bite was taken, a slight hint of pressure was felt as Alex was patiently anticipating my reaction and the first impressions were positive. The burger really didn’t taste like it was missing anything, as many others have done, in a way it was nice to have a well cooked, simple burger that takes you back to basics; again, unlike others.

It was a thick, juicy, flavoursome piece of prime beef, lacking nothing, joined with an array of pleasing counterparts. If & when you visit Gorilla, order this burger and ask Alex to make you a sweet cocktail. Burger rating: 7 out of 10
