FIVE GUYS – BACON BURGER w/ pickles & grilled onions

– 5 Coliseum Way, Chester

I could write line after line about how Britain perceive Five Guys as a higher class fast food restaurant, with the idea they are experiencing a slice of America. But with all respect, it doesn’t fill expectations.

Five Guys hold a unique & creative experience where you can add as many selected ingredients to any burger you choose at no extra cost. This part of Five Guys can either be a success or a failure.

((regular two-patty burger, layered with four pieces of crispy, sweet apple-wood smoked bacon extra: pickles, grilled onions, mayonnaise))

Five Guys don’t help themselves from the offset with moist and greasy bread. The bread is an imperative part of a burger, its the backbone, its the glue that figuratively and literally holds the burger together. So i suggest getting it perfected.

Considering everything, the bacon/beef/pickles and onions weren’t all that bad, it’s just hard to justify £11.50 for a burger and a drink and that’s without chips too. Quite simply overpriced. Burger rating: 4 out of 10.

STEAK ‘N SHAKE – BACON LOVERS

– 14, Frodsham St, CH1 3JL, Chester

There’s a slight apprehension in my mind when a steak burger is mentioned, this is solely down from experience with previous burgers, but this time it felt different and it was different.

Sited in the heart of Chester City Centre surrounded by toy shops and fashion stores is Steak N Shake, a 5 month old burger restaurant with 80 years experience.

The choice of burgers seemed to be endless being able to add or subtract ingredients at your own will, at times this can be stressful but being my first time, I went simple.

BACON LOVERS–
((Double Steakburger, two slices of American cheese, four strips bacon, ketchup, mayo))

I’ve had all of these ingredients on many burgers before, but this particular burger oozed a lot of flavour in a reasonably small area, I was impressed.

Tender, succulent and delectable are the only words to describe this burger, the meat was cooked to almost perfection which has permanently altered my perception on steak burgers.

I only had two qualms; there was an extreme amount of sauce, which made eating it an ugly mess and the burger was a tad too small, these could be improved.

You can see in all areas Steak N Shake know what they’re doing and they know their way around a burger. Burger Rating; 8 out of 10.

BELLA ITALIA – BURGER AMERICANO

Cheshire Oaks, Coliseum Way, Ellesmere Port.

Christmas shopping lays hand in hand with good food, and my current intentions are to find the most delicious burger. I carried this personal quest into Bella Italia.

Chargrilled Aberdeen Angus beef burger, gem leaves, tomato, onion & mayonnaise in a ciabatta roll. With cheese and bacon as extras.

What Bella Italia have here is an extremely basic burger with basic ingredients, showing no respect on what even the simplest burger should taste like. The salad here was far too overwhelming, I’d say around 70% salad and we aren’t buying a burger for the salad are we.

The beef itself was unsettling with an extreme lack of flavour, provided it is described as ‘chargrilled’ but this leaves nothing other than some overly cooked meat between some bread. This silly choice of bread was an attempt to place an Italian twist on a seemingly non Italian meal.

As a collection the burger wasn’t anything to talk about, but the chips and BBQ sauce that accompanied were mighty fine. The BBQ sauce was sweet with a thick consistency, more of a BBQ relish but either way it was a pleasurable condiment.

A dissatisfied burger rating of 2 out of 10.

NANDO’S – BUTTERFLY BURGER

– Bretton Road, Chester, Flintshire CH4 0DE

As hunger was drawing closer and closer upon my girlfriend and I, with three high chain restaurants sitting in the corner of our eyes, Nando’s was the majority vote. With the menu placed infront of me, my eyes obviously veered to the selection of burgers.

Understandably there wasn’t a wide selection to choose from, what else are they meant to do with chicken? So deciding and paying was the painless part, waiting in anticipation was the difficulty, as usual.

The burger arrived with two sides, chips with Peri Peri spice and coleslaw, which was planned to be shared between my girlfriend and I, also the presentation of the meal was not in anyway underwhelming, beautiful. The big double breast of chicken came packed in a Portuguese roll, which I wasn’t hugely fond of due to its rough & hard consistancy also it’s lack of capability to keep all of the counterparts together while eating it.

All together the burger was delicious, very filling but they warn you of this on the menu, considering all of the above I’d give the butterfly burger a 6 out of 10.

Not too shabby for a fast food restaurant in disguise.
