ZING BURGER & CO – BBQ BURGER

– somewhere in Budapest, Hungary.

After being in Budapest for a long 5 hours, an introductory burger felt almost mandatory, which brought us to an area of street food named Karaván

There was a lot of abstract and unorthodox foods within the confines of Karaván, which gave you a good sense of what type of foods the Hungarians like to dine on. But tonight I only have eyes on the promising looking burgers from Zing Burger & Co.

The BBQ Burger was the unsuspecting choice;

((Chilli mayo, caramelised onion, patty, cheddar, bacon, BBQ sauce, pickles))

Quite simply all I’m going to do here is sing this burgers praises, all the ingredients were extremely flavoursome with beautiful textures. The patty was cooked well done, which sat well with both sauces making the burger pleasant from all areas and the bread was second to none, which we all know is important.

Apart from the wait time, which was around 15 – 20 minutes and considering the price 1390HUF (£3.90) this burger was a game changer in Budapest.

Burger rating: 9.2 out of 10

ALMOST FAMOUS – BLAME IT ON THE VODKA

 – 23-25 Great George St, Leeds, LS1 3AL

A long weekend away in the popular Yorkshire city of Leeds started off with a burger, and in a very familiar place.

Visiting Almost Famous is an extremely unique experience which ever restaurant you find yourself visiting, with an endless menu of gargantuan burgers with extraordinary fillings. Blame it on the vodka was my next experience, full of everything that even exceeds your imagination.

((Cheese, double pepperoni, bacon bacon fries, wonder onions, jalapeño, red onion, pickle, bacon ketchup, dynamite))

This burger in particular was bulging from all angles, which unfortunately left many fillings falling out but importantly, the majority stayed intact. I refuse to dismantle a burger before consuming it, which did become somewhat of a challenge, but nothing I couldn’t take care of.

When so many ingredients are piled on to two pieces of bread, some of the ingredients struggle to make themselves known, this was the problem with Blame it on the vodka.

As a collective the burger was extremely flavoursome, full of juices & textures with a lot of mass.

Possibly the heaviest burger I’ve eaten. Burger rating: 8.5 out of 10.

TURTLE BAY – TWO WAY CHICKEN BURGER

– 33-35 Oxford St, Manchester M1 4WB

While holstering a sensitive palate, spicy foods can be quite daunting, so dining in the Caribbean restaurant Turtle Bay can be an exciting yet a nerve racking experience.

Only set for a light luncheon i fixed my eyes firmly on the burgers. Being overly cautious I picked out the least spicy and left everything else ignored, which left me with the Two Way Chicken Burger –

((Spicy panko crumbed chicken fillet, topped with pull jerk chicken, crisp gem lettuce, fresh pineapple chow & herb mayo in a sweet bun))

This looks and sounds like only something Turtle Bay could manifest, with a prominent Caribbean twist to what can normally be a mundane chicken burger.

With flavours that felt endless and textures that caressed your lips and mouth, this burger carry’s a lot in-comparison to its size. The two different types of cooked chicken was the game changer, each chicken had a very unique flavour which i believe could stand for the reason this burger was so brilliant for its size.

Lastly, the fresh pineapple chow was extremely spicy and in opinion unnecessary, the burger would cope very easily without it.

An applaudable effort by Turtle Bay, this will stand in my top 5 chicken burgers eaten to date. Burger rating: 7.7 out of 10.

FIVE GUYS – BACON BURGER w/ pickles & grilled onions

– 5 Coliseum Way, Chester

I could write line after line about how Britain perceive Five Guys as a higher class fast food restaurant, with the idea they are experiencing a slice of America. But with all respect, it doesn’t fill expectations.

Five Guys hold a unique & creative experience where you can add as many selected ingredients to any burger you choose at no extra cost. This part of Five Guys can either be a success or a failure.

((regular two-patty burger, layered with four pieces of crispy, sweet apple-wood smoked bacon extra: pickles, grilled onions, mayonnaise))

Five Guys don’t help themselves from the offset with moist and greasy bread. The bread is an imperative part of a burger, its the backbone, its the glue that figuratively and literally holds the burger together. So i suggest getting it perfected.

Considering everything, the bacon/beef/pickles and onions weren’t all that bad, it’s just hard to justify £11.50 for a burger and a drink and that’s without chips too. Quite simply overpriced. Burger rating: 4 out of 10.

STEAK ‘N SHAKE – BACON LOVERS

– 14, Frodsham St, CH1 3JL, Chester

There’s a slight apprehension in my mind when a steak burger is mentioned, this is solely down from experience with previous burgers, but this time it felt different and it was different.

Sited in the heart of Chester City Centre surrounded by toy shops and fashion stores is Steak N Shake, a 5 month old burger restaurant with 80 years experience.

The choice of burgers seemed to be endless being able to add or subtract ingredients at your own will, at times this can be stressful but being my first time, I went simple.

BACON LOVERS–
((Double Steakburger, two slices of American cheese, four strips bacon, ketchup, mayo))

I’ve had all of these ingredients on many burgers before, but this particular burger oozed a lot of flavour in a reasonably small area, I was impressed.

Tender, succulent and delectable are the only words to describe this burger, the meat was cooked to almost perfection which has permanently altered my perception on steak burgers.

I only had two qualms; there was an extreme amount of sauce, which made eating it an ugly mess and the burger was a tad too small, these could be improved.

You can see in all areas Steak N Shake know what they’re doing and they know their way around a burger. Burger Rating; 8 out of 10.

THE CORN MILL – STEAK BURGER

– Dee Lane, Llangollen, North Wales

Burgers are an anomalous, an incomparable blend of whatever ingredients you feel fit. Which is where the beauty lies, in the mind of the creator and at the fingertips of the maker.

Closing in to nearly 40 opinionatedburger reviews, it seems like burgers have become 90% of my meal intake and this was carried on at lunch, in the beautiful tourist town of Llangollen.

I won’t babble anymore, I’ll get to the important content. The burger. Labelled as the Steak Burger, I was interested for three reasons; I’ve surprisingly never had a steak burger previously, I was ravenous and what else could I choose from the menu?

The entire mass and weight of the burger was overwhelming, not so much the amount of content but the size of each ingredient was not done in half portions. The steak which made up most of the burger was of great quality but the flavour overpowered pretty much everything and that was this burgers downfall.

The steak was of gargantuan size which killed the burger, but with the chips, salsa and cheese following closely behind I managed to finish the burger feeling accomplished and satisfied.

I’ll stick to ordinary burgers from now on. Burger rating; 3 out of 10.

MCDONALDS – BACON CLUBHOUSE DOUBLE

– Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet, Ellesmere Port

I can confidently admit that I like McDonald’s, not love, not adore, like. McDonald’s attractiveness stems from its reliability, convenience and price. You can’t ask much more from a fast food restaurant.

New and sometimes temporary additions are added to the menu for seasononal purposes and/or just to boost sales, the most recent is the Bacon Clubhouse Double

My first and last impression was, it’s like a BigMac wearing a tutu and that’s about it. Taste and texture were pretty standard which is McDonald’s forte, but appearance and structure were not thought through.

Any of McDonald’s long running burgers are neat, trim and built with flawless structure but this can’t be said for the Bacon Clubhouse Double. The soft unusual brioche bun gave no reliability to the mass of messy ingredients that spewed out, lets leave brioche out of this McDonalds.

Unfortunately I can’t recommend this burger but what I can recommend, is sticking to the long running, average priced, reliable burgers. You can’t go wrong there. Burger rating: 4 out of 10.
