THE CORN MILL – STEAK BURGER

– Dee Lane, Llangollen, North Wales

Burgers are an anomalous, an incomparable blend of whatever ingredients you feel fit. Which is where the beauty lies, in the mind of the creator and at the fingertips of the maker.

Closing in to nearly 40 opinionatedburger reviews, it seems like burgers have become 90% of my meal intake and this was carried on at lunch, in the beautiful tourist town of Llangollen.

I won’t babble anymore, I’ll get to the important content. The burger. Labelled as the Steak Burger, I was interested for three reasons; I’ve surprisingly never had a steak burger previously, I was ravenous and what else could I choose from the menu?

The entire mass and weight of the burger was overwhelming, not so much the amount of content but the size of each ingredient was not done in half portions. The steak which made up most of the burger was of great quality but the flavour overpowered pretty much everything and that was this burgers downfall.

The steak was of gargantuan size which killed the burger, but with the chips, salsa and cheese following closely behind I managed to finish the burger feeling accomplished and satisfied.

I’ll stick to ordinary burgers from now on. Burger rating; 3 out of 10.

THE CORN MILL – STEAK BURGER

MCDONALDS – BACON CLUBHOUSE DOUBLE

– Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet, Ellesmere Port

I can confidently admit that I like McDonald’s, not love, not adore, like. McDonald’s attractiveness stems from its reliability, convenience and price. You can’t ask much more from a fast food restaurant.

New and sometimes temporary additions are added to the menu for seasononal purposes and/or just to boost sales, the most recent is the Bacon Clubhouse Double

My first and last impression was, it’s like a BigMac wearing a tutu and that’s about it. Taste and texture were pretty standard which is McDonald’s forte, but appearance and structure were not thought through.

Any of McDonald’s long running burgers are neat, trim and built with flawless structure but this can’t be said for the Bacon Clubhouse Double. The soft unusual brioche bun gave no reliability to the mass of messy ingredients that spewed out, lets leave brioche out of this McDonalds.

Unfortunately I can’t recommend this burger but what I can recommend, is sticking to the long running, average priced, reliable burgers. You can’t go wrong there. Burger rating: 4 out of 10.

HICKORY’s – SOUTHERN FRIED CHICKEN BURGER

– 9 Llandudno Road, Rhos-on-Sea, North Wales. LL28 4TR

Hickory’s Smokehouse don’t bare the largest choice of burgers, so on this visit I’m left with only one burger I haven’t tried. Of course I chose that burger to dine on.

With a very welcoming and busy atmosphere, my girlfriend and I sipped on our delicious sugary drinks awaiting our food. Chicken burgers aren’t my normal choice, but a burgers is a burger and I was excited nevertheless.

((Double stack fried chicken with melted cheese, creole mayo, lettuce and tomato))

The size, mass and filling of the burger  were gargantuan something Hickory’s feel a necessity in each meal, but quality over quantity, right?

The Southern Fried Chicken Burger was very simple, so simple it was silently requesting other absorbing and alluring ingredients but forgetting what could of been, I’ll assess the positives.

The two chicken breasts were flavoursome, juicy and of ample size. The cheese was false advertised and not melted but still blended well with the burger as a whole. Everything else fell by the way side being close to bang average but I don’t feel it’s necessary to delve into the intrecates as they’re minor.

Hickory’s will continue to produce reasonably priced above average, imitation American style burgers, served in a welcoming atmosphere. Hickory’s can be defined as try- hards, I think that’s quite appropriate, but I like try-hards. Burger rating: 6 out of 10.

ALMOST FAMOUS – RIVER PHEONIX

– Manchester, Great Northern Warehouse

Typical weekend centred in Manchester on a rainy, busy Saturday evening and hunting for my next meal, I guess nothing changes.

It’s a huge treat getting the chance to visit Almost Famous for exclusive burgers & fries, so much so each time I’m tempted to double up on everything. Can you imagine the review?
Not feeling majoring extravagant I went with one of their more tame burgers, the River Pheonix

(Cheese, Bacon, Shoestring Onions, Frazzles, Red Chilies, Redneck BBQ, Bacon Bacon Mayo, Winning Ketchup)

This burger is majorly sauce based, not forgetting the powerful flavours that the sauces bring, it also transforms the burger into a slippery challenge.
Putting the underlying structural flaws aside, the flavour of the burger as a whole were phenomenal. The beef patty tender as the next, bacon soft but crispy and onions cooked to crunchy perfection.

This burger is a winner, along with many from Almost Famous’ menu, it just needs to be easier to eat. Burger rating: 7 out of 10.

GOURMET BURGER KITCHEN – THE DON

14 Paradise Street, Liverpool, England

2 burgers for £12? I’ll take that any day of the week, even if it is on a Thursday evening 44 miles away. Promotion really is one of Gourmet Burger Kitchen strengths, along with astonishing burgers.

Making sure I select a burger I’ve not eaten yet, only really leaves me with 1 or 2 to choose from. The Don held my attention on the menu showing promise with some of GBK’s classic ingredients and this quickly become my choice.

((American cheese, gorgonzola, baconnaise, rocket, onion jam, house mayo, pickled onions))

All I can give this burger is praise, everything that accompanied the juicy, medium cooked beef was in the correct proportions, spread evenly across the length of the burger leaving no room for anything else. The pickled onions, along with the gorgonzola could be argued that they are unnecessary as they come across over powering to other ingredients. Maybe that’s a personal opinion.

In hindsight, the design could of been better thought out, the aesthetics and construction were second to none and the materials used were top notch. Typical GBK. Burger Rating: 8 out of 10.

JAMIE’s ITALIAN – THE JAMIE’s ITALIAN BURGER

– The Assembly Rooms, 54 George StreetEdinburgh, EH2 2LR

Edinburgh is well known for its enriched castle, medieval town, hills and friendly people but what can be said about their burgers?

The choice of restaurant wasn’t typically Scottish but I like to believe that all the ingredients were sourced locally, especially considering Jamie Oliver’s reputation.

Seated very central in a large hall with high ceilings, the waiters flowed around with a certain prowess, seeing to everyone’s requests with a personal touch. My meal this evening was the Jamie’s Italian burger w/ fries.

((Prime British beef patty with pancetta, balsamic onions, artisan Westcombe Cheddar, tomato & our house special sauce in a brioche bun))

Unfortunately this burger presented far too many critical mistakes, the beef burger was cooked beautifully but the quantity was overwhelming and this was the underlying issue. All other counterparts to the beef burger fell obsolete as the beef was extremely overpowering. I can’t give a proper review on each ingredient as I truly didn’t taste them, other than the cheese, the cheese was full of flavour but was presented in a lump in the centre of the burger. Lastly, the seeded brioche bun, hard on the top, soft in the middle, with a sweet after taste – this was applaudable.

Compared to the average burger this burger wasn’t too bad, it just wasn’t what they advertised on the menu. Average burger with great service.

Burger rating; 5 out of 10. Thanks for having me Edinburger.

THE HARLEY (TWISTED BURGER COMPANY) – RETURN OF THE MAC

– The Harley, 334 Glossop Road, Sheffield, S10 2HW

With a heavy head and wavy eyes, me and four friends dined at The Harley for some proper Sheffield burgers… hangover cure?

A choice of 6 very solid burgers stood centrefold on the blindingly overwhelming menu making it a onerous decision. With guidance from a devoted attendee to The Harley, I was confidently lead toward the ‘Return of the Mac’ burger.

(Double bacon patty, Mac n Cheese, Harley House Relish and Pesto)

I can say with confidence this burger is one of the more obscure burgers I’ve eaten to date, with its wide array of unconventional burger ingredients and the UK’s first bacon meat patty.

From the first bite to the last the bacon patty made this burger a completely different experience, but still a noteworthy one at that. The pesto was quite delightful, again quite unusual for me as this is a first on a burger but with the mac n cheese and house relish, it blended in and wasn’t too overpowering.

I feel this burger needs a sister burger where it’s available with a beef patty instead of bacon, as I think this is what will make it one of the finest. But until then, I’ll give this burger a burger rating of 7 out of 10.
